This weekend the Danish Muaythai Championship took place in Copenhagen’s beautiful and most historic sports venue in Copenhagen. The venue is built so that the audience sits high up, looking down into the ring in true gladiator style, which gave the competition a great atmosphere.
The Championship was organized to a high standard, with doping controls performed by the relevant authorities. Uniforms were made for the fighters to wear over the 2 day tournament period, mirroring an international event.
The opening ceremony kicked off the event with a traditional Thai dance and award presentations for “Fighter of the Year 2012.” This year’s award went to Julian Bengtsen, who won gold at both the IFMA Nordic Championship and the IFMA World Championship. After being presented with the award Julian read aloud the Muaythai Pledge, which is upheld by all athletes, and the competition was opened.
The best fight of the night was the finale in the Male -67kg, between the Danish Champion 2012 Kasper Tobberup, and Thomas Bossen, who was making a comeback after a 3 year break due to an injury. In a very close fight, both athletes showed beautiful technique, demonstrating the art of Muaythai. In the end Thomas won the fight, making his comeback a total success.
The finals covered the Male, Female and Junior divisions. In the closing ceremony, prizes were given for “Best Fighter at the Championship” – Kasper Tobberup, “Best Ram Muay at the Championship”- Peter Jessen, and “Best Gym at the Championship”- Siam Athlete Nation.
IFMA’s values, “Honour, Tradition, Respect, Excellence and Fairplay” were present in every aspect of the tournament: it was a very proud day for Danish Muaythai.
