Excitement is building as the 2024 IFMA Asian Muaythai Open Invitational Tournament is set to take place at the Taipei Municipal Gymnasium from October 18th to 21st. This landmark event marks the first time Chinese Taipei will host an international Muaythai competition, drawing athletes from all over the Asia Pacific region to compete on Taiwanese soil. It represents a significant milestone in the development of Muaythai in Taiwan.
The Chinese Taipei Muaythai Association, recognized by IFMA, the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, and the Sports Ministry, has been instrumental in bringing this event to fruition. Despite Muaythai’s relatively recent rise in Chinese Taipei, the nation has already made impressive strides. Last year, the country participated in the East Asian Muaythai Championship in Hong Kong and clinched its first gold medal. In both 2023 and 2024, several athletes from Chinese Taipei secured fifth-place finishes in the IFMA World Muaythai Championship, steadily carving out a presence on the global stage.
An important press conference was held yesterday, attended by notable VIPs, signaling the event’s significance and the excitement surrounding it.
This year’s tournament will be held at the Taipei Gymnasium and will kick off with a grand Opening Ceremony on October 18th. The following four days will feature nonstop Muaythai action, showcasing top athletes from the Asia Pacific region, including Thailand, the Philippines, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, New Zealand, India, and South Korea.
The event will highlight various Muaythai divisions, including Combat Elite, U23, Masters, and the cultural Wai Kru. Adhering to IFMA rules and regulations, the tournament will ensure in-competition testing according to WADA standards. Additionally, the event promotes educational exchange through R&J courses to advance the skills of referees and judges, accommodating the rapid growth of Muaythai in the region.
