“Fair play ensures that every athlete, no matter where they come from, has the same chance to shine. Referees and judges are the guardians of the ring—protecting athletes, preserving fairness, and upholding respect.”

This guiding principle was at the heart of the latest World IFMA Referee & Judge Course, bringing together over 100 carefully selected referees and judges from all five continents for an intensive five-day program. Led by Ajarn Somchai (Thailand), Abby Nelson (Australia), and Günter Plank (Austria), the course embodied IFMA’s unwavering commitment to excellence, education, and safeguarding.

IFMA’s technical rules and regulations are among the strongest in the sporting world, ensuring consistency across all competitions. Every official must be deeply skilled and uphold two inseparable principles in every decision: fairness and safeguarding. To reinforce this, IFMA holds four international referee and judge courses each year, where referees and International Technical Officials (ITOs) come together to align standards and strengthen their role as guardians of the sport.

Day 1 – Building the Foundation
The course began with a deep dive into the fundamentals: scoring principles, referee responsibilities, and point-awarding systems. Through interactive presentations and scenario-based drills, participants didn’t just learn the rules—they brought them to life. Hands-on sessions in the ring allowed officials to practice gestures, commands, and protocols, setting a strong foundation for the days ahead.

Day 2 – Reflection and Refinement
The focus shifted from theory to analysis. Performances and scores from live competition were reviewed in detail, with video analysis used to dissect decisions and reactions. This reflective learning gave participants the chance to identify strengths, address challenges, and refine their officiating. The afternoon returned to the ring, where practical sessions sharpened skills in clinch control, issuing cautions, and maintaining athlete safety under pressure.

Day 3 – Safeguarding First
The heartbeat of officiating was front and center: safeguarding the athlete. Participants received detailed instruction on equipment checks, safe ring entry, Wai Kru procedures, and bout initiation. Through open discussion, the group explored how every decision inside the ring must prioritize athlete wellbeing—reminding everyone that safety is not just a duty, but the essence of being a referee.

Day 4 – Bringing It All Together
The final day tied all the threads together. A comprehensive review of scoring systems ensured clarity and consistency across all participants, followed by an open Q&A session that encouraged dialogue, curiosity, and exchange of experience. The energy in the room was electric—proof of the passion, unity, and dedication of IFMA’s officials to uphold the highest global standards.

A Record-Breaking Moment
With over 500 registered referees, judges, and technical officials worldwide, IFMA continues to raise the bar for officiating. The 2025 Youth World Championships welcomed an unprecedented 132 referees from 48 countries, a powerful testament to Muaythai’s global growth and the diversity of its officiating body.

As Senior ITO Gunter Plank stated:
“Our duty as officials is to ensure fairness by applying the same rules to every athlete, every time.”

Or, in the words that echo across every ring:
“Fair play is the soul of Muaythai—without it, victory has no meaning.”

As the sole IOC-recognized International Federation for Muaythai, IFMA carries a profound responsibility. Our duty goes beyond organizing competitions—it is about ensuring that every athlete, regardless of age, gender, or nationality, competes under the same rules, with the same protection. Fair play and safeguarding are not just values; they are our mandate.
