As Thailand and Indonesia celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, their enduring friendship is beautifully reflected through their national martial arts—Muaythai and Pencak Silat. Both disciplines embody respect, tradition, and regional unity, serving as cultural pillars that continue to bring the two nations closer together.

Muaythai, Thailand’s national martial art, is deeply rooted in history, spirituality, and cultural expression. Practiced and embraced across Southeast Asia, it has long served as a bridge for people‑to‑people connection and regional cooperation. Alongside it stands Pencak Silat, the pride of Indonesia—an art form that represents identity, discipline, and cultural continuity, enriching the shared martial heritage of the region.

A Historic Moment at the SEA Games

The milestone year 2025 was further distinguished by a landmark achievement for Indonesia. At the 33rd SEA Games, Indonesia earned its first‑ever silver medal in the Wai Kru category of Muaythai.

The performance by Aldento Brillian Bara Pratama captivated audiences with its technical precision and profound respect for the cultural and spiritual foundations of Muaythai. His achievement reflects Indonesia’s growing confidence, cultural understanding, and maturity on the international Muaythai stage.

Indonesia’s Rising Presence in International Muaythai
As a committed member of the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA), Indonesia has demonstrated steady and impressive development. Investments in athlete pathways, coach education, and structured national championships have created a strong foundation for long‑term success.

These advancements highlight the inclusive nature of Muaythai—where sport, culture, and values are celebrated equally—while standing proudly alongside the traditions of Pencak Silat.

A Landmark MOU: Strengthening Unity Through Martial Arts
A significant pillar of cooperation between the two nations is the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the International Pencak Silat Federation (PERSILAT) and IFMA.

This historic agreement formalises collaboration between two of Southeast Asia’s most respected martial arts, promoting:
- Mutual respect and cultural exchange
- Joint education and development programmes
- Cooperation in international multi‑sport events
- Preservation of heritage alongside modern sport governance
The MOU stands as a powerful symbol of unity, demonstrating how traditional martial arts can work together to strengthen regional identity and elevate global recognition.
