The 6th Islamic Solidarity Games opened in Riyadh with a vibrant celebration that filled King Fahd International Stadium, bringing together athletes from 57 nations under the theme “One Nation – Shared Vision.” The event marked a proud moment for the Kingdom as His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud declared the Games open on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

The ceremony drew ministers, National Olympic Committee presidents, and representatives of international and continental sporting bodies, reflecting the significance of this gathering for the global Islamic sporting community. The athlete parade set the tone for the evening, a tapestry of colour and anticipation as delegations from across the world entered the stadium to enthusiastic applause. The atmosphere carried a quiet power, shaped by years of preparation for many of the young athletes stepping onto this international stage.

In his welcome message, HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Minister of Sport and President of ISSA, highlighted the role of sport as a forum for understanding and collaboration, extending Riyadh’s embrace to the youth of the Islamic world. Prince Faisal echoed this sentiment, noting the honour of hosting such a distinguished assembly of athletes whose shared values form the foundation of these Games.

The Opening Ceremony combined tradition and modern creativity in a sweeping narrative of the Islamic world’s heritage and its aspirations. A series of artistic performances and a spectacular display of light and drones cast a lively glow over Riyadh, symbolising optimism and unity.

This edition of the Games marks a historic milestone for Muaythai, which joins the programme under the authority of the International Federation of Muaythai Associations. Representing IFMA at the ceremony were His Royal Highness Prince Fahad bin Mansour Al Saud, IFMA Vice President, and IFMA Secretary General Stephan Fox. Both expressed pride in seeing Muaythai recognised within this multi-sport platform and noted the deep alignment between the art’s values and the spirit of the Games. Fox emphasised the years of dedication that paved the way for this moment, acknowledging athletes, coaches, and national federations whose commitment helped elevate the sport to international prominence. Prince Fahad highlighted Muaythai’s ethos of respect, discipline, and friendship as a meaningful contribution to the Games’ cultural and sporting diversity.

More than 3,500 athletes will compete in 21 sports over the coming two weeks, from athletics and taekwondo to wrestling, swimming, football, and Muaythai. Their participation reflects the heart of the event: a shared pursuit of excellence shaped by courage, resilience, and the ideals of fair play. Para-sport competitions are integrated into the main programme for the first time, underscoring the Games’ commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity for athletes of all abilities.

Riyadh 2025 stands firmly within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030, reinforcing the Kingdom’s efforts to champion youth empowerment, active lifestyles, and its growing role as a host for international sporting events. Fox described the Games as a signal to the world, a reminder that sport can strengthen communities and foster lasting connections.

As the flame of solidarity rose above the stadium, Riyadh presented itself not only as a host city but as a meeting point for cultures and a place where unity, respect, and shared aspirations can thrive. The legacy of these Games promises to extend well beyond their closing day, carried forward by the athletes, officials, and communities who gathered here in celebration.
