The 2025 ASEAN Muaythai Championships, hosted by the Malaysian Muaythai Federation, marked a pivotal moment for Southeast Asia’s elite athletes. As the final test before the SEA Games, the event brought together the region’s powerhouses—Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam—for a thrilling display of skill, tradition, and resilience.

Following Thailand’s unexpected absence from the gold medal podium at the World Games, national pride was at stake. The Thai team responded with determination and excellence, reclaiming their dominance in a fiercely contested three-way race for the overall title. Ultimately, Thailand emerged as the champion team, reaffirming its place at the top of the ASEAN Muaythai pyramid.

From the opening day, the venue was packed to capacity, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity and cultural significance. The championships featured:
- Wai Kru and Mai Muay cultural competitions
- Muaythai combat
- Special demonstrations in Para and Adaptive Muaythai, showcasing inclusivity and innovation

Dato Shahnaz Azmi, President of the Malaysian Muaythai Association and Vice President of FAMA, emphasized the event’s importance:
“This championship demonstrates ASEAN’s strength on both cultural and competitive fronts. With Malaysia leading the bid to host the 2026 IFMA World Championships, this event was a crucial milestone.”

The full support of the Malaysian government and National Olympic Committee underscored the strategic value of Muaythai in regional sport development.
Thailand’s national team captain Domthong Lookjaoporrongtom, reflected on the journey:
“Luck wasn’t on our side at the World Games. This time, we came prepared—with our strongest team and a clear understanding of the challenge ahead. Competing against a host nation like China means facing not just skilled opponents, but thousands of passionate spectators. The atmosphere here was electric, and we’re proud to say: Thailand is back and ready for the SEA Games.”
