Athletes from 10 sports of The World Games are competing at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires this and next week.

Yesterday, Keita Dohi (JPN) and Sandra Lettner (AUT) became Sport Climbing’sfirst Youth Olympic Games gold medallists, and Austria and Japan won four medals altogether. Vita Lukan from Slovenia, Shuta Tanaka from Japan, Sam Avezou (FRA) and Laura Lammer (AUT) climbed to silver and bronze medals. At the Youth Olympic Games the sport climbers compete in Combined discipline, which combines The World Games disciplines Speed, Boulder and Lead.

DanceSport also made its first appearance at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Russian Sergei Chernyshev, aka Bumblebee, and Japanese Ramu Kawai, aka Ram, became the first Youth Olympic Games champions in Breaking.

The teenage breakers wowed the large and vocal crowd with spirited performances in the finals, with Bumblebee outlasting Martin (FRA) and Ram defeating Emma (CAN).

B-boy Bumblebee impressed the judges and spectators alike with his athletic skills, creativity and musicality. After the victory, he said the fact that he was an Olympic champion had not quite sunk in. “I don’t really understand the result,” he said.

“Not now. Maybe tomorrow. All I can say is that I did this for my father, for my family, my friends, for Russia. I’m happy, but I still don’t understand it.”

In Speed Skating, the gold medals went to Colombia. In women’s class, Gabriela Rueda Rueda dominated, whereas men’s winner was Jhony Andres Angulo Reina. Honorine Barrault (FRA) Giorgia Valanzano (ITA) Merijn Scheperkamp (NED) bronze.

Still to come for The World Games family at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires are the finals of Beach Handball, Karate, Rhythmic Gymnastics, and Rugby Sevens and the Olympic disciplines of Archery, Canoe and Hockey.

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 15-25 July 2021. 3,600 athletes from over 30 sports and 100 countries will take part in the Games.

One of the important criteria for sports aspiring for inclusion on future Olympic Games programmes is that they must first be included on The World Games programme.

Muaythai debuted at the 2017 World Games programme in Wroclaw Poland and is already included for a second time on the The World Games 2021 programme in Birmingham, Alabama.
