The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games officially opened on 16 July with a sold-out and emotionally charged ceremony at Duisburg’s Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena. More than 20,000 spectators filled the stadium in a jubilant celebration of sport, culture, and youth empowerment, marking the beginning of twelve days of elite university competition and international unity.

The atmosphere was electric from the outset. Drawing inspiration from the industrial heritage of the region, towering LED installations evoking the iconic chimneys of the Ruhr Valley formed a dramatic backdrop, while a touching rendition of the “Steigerlied” — performed by schoolchildren and retired miners — rooted the spectacle firmly in local pride. Yet, it was the athletes themselves who stole the show. Nearly 8,000 student-athletes representing over 2,000 universities from around the globe took part in the Parade of Nations, capturing the Games’ spirit of friendship and solidarity. Thanks to a live broadcast, more than 1,500 athletes competing in Berlin were also able to join the moment, creating a truly national and international opening.

The scale and symbolism of the event were not lost on FISU President Leonz Eder, who praised the high level of participation and the vibrancy of the evening. “A great and impressive opening for wonderful Games,” he said. “The region of North Rhine-Westphalia truly lives the spirit of the FISU Games.”
The ceremony was a powerful reflection of the growing cooperation across the international sporting community, with leaders from various federations and global youth movements present to show their support. The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) extended its warm congratulations to the organisers and the entire FISU family.
“On behalf of the global Muaythai community, I wish to congratulate FISU on this inspiring celebration of youth and sport,” said IFMA President Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan. “University sport plays a vital role in building not just strong athletes, but responsible global citizens. The FISU Games are a shining example of how sport and education together can shape a better, more united world.”
IFMA Director General Charissa Tynan echoed the sentiment, highlighting IFMA’s proud standing as a FISU-recognised federation. “We are fully committed to promoting the core values of excellence, friendship, and respect — values that resonate deeply within the Muaythai community. Through our university programmes and international events, we continue to support FISU’s mission of empowering youth through education and sport.”
Music and performance were central to the evening’s emotional resonance. Ayliva, Montez, Querbeat, and DJ Topic shared the stage with the WDR Funkhausorchester and hundreds of student and professional dancers, delivering an energetic blend of classical and contemporary sounds that had the entire stadium on its feet.
The most poignant moment of the evening came with the arrival of the ceremonial flame. Olympic and Universiade icon Heide Ecker-Rosendahl entered the arena to a rousing ovation before handing the flame to six elite student-athletes, who together lit the six flame towers. As the stadium erupted in applause, the gesture signalled not just the opening of the Games, but the enduring power of youth to ignite change.
With the flame now burning and the Games in full swing, Rhine-Ruhr 2025 stands as a celebration of student-athletes not only as competitors, but as future leaders and changemakers — united by sport, driven by education, and ready to shape a brighter future.
