A spectacular opening ceremony launched the European Muaythai Championships 2017 in Paris today, attended by dignitaries from the world of sport and with the athletes leading the way.
Laura Flessel, Sports Minister of France addressed the athletes and said how happy she was to be at the ceremony with them. Minister Flessel is herself a former Olympic athlete and highly decorated.
Denis Masseglia, president of the French National Olympic Committee welcomed IFMA athletes to the Olympic family and also to France in spirit of the Olympic movement.
Nadir Allouache, president of the FFKMDA said what a proud moment this is for French muaythai, to be among sports fans and fans of muaythai gathered together.
Patrick Karam, vice-president for youth and sport in the Ile-De-France region said sport is essential and is an effective social power.
IFMA general secretary Stephan Fox thanked everyone for coming, and said how delighted the athletes are to be in Paris. He thanked the people of Paris for opening their hearts to the international teams. And congratulated Paris again on being selected as host for Olympics 2024.
One representative each from the community of athletes, coaches and referees gave the Oath on behalf of their peers, a moving commitment to fair play and respect during the tournament.
And then it was the turn of the famous French can-can dance to take centre stage in a swirl of glitter, sequins and drama. The athletes who all attended the event were well-entertained until suddenly it was time to declare the Championships open!
