The Muaythai community is excited to be once again included on the sport programme for the Arafura Games, taking place in Darwin, Australia next year. The Games encourage the sharing of sporting and cultural knowledge in the Asia-Pacific region, with Muaythai adding a traditional flavour to the mix.
Registration has just opened for the 16 sports involved, with athletes all around the region already hard at work. As are the organisers in Darwin, with the full support of the Northern Territory government.
Minister for the Arafura Games Ken Vowles says: “I’ve been involved in the Arafura Games both as a volunteer and a participant and it is an awesome experience. The Opening and Closing Celebrations will take place at an iconic Top End location – the beautiful Darwin Waterfront.”
The Oceania Muaythai Federation under Sue Glassey (New Zealand ) and Muaythai Australia are working closely with the organisers, and the IFMA head office in Bangkok to ensure Muaythai athletes will have a positive experience at the Games. It is a fun opportunity for athletes to share the stage with other sports, and mingle with athletes from different sports. MTA National Coach Corey Impelmans is based in Darwin, and in a good position to liaise with the local organizers.
Countries which have already confirmed support for their athletes include Australia, China, Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands, The Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.
The sports include Athletics, Table Tennis, Boxing, Football (Soccer), Badminton, Swimming, Tennis, Muay Thai, Sailing, Indoor Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Weightlifting, Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Dragon Boating and Sepak Takraw. An integrated para program will be included in Athletics, Swimming, Tennis, Netball and Table Tennis.
