Credit and thanks must go to Dato’ Shahnaz Azmi, President of the Malaysian Muaythai Association, who has worked so hard for the development of the sport in his country.

The National Sports Council (NSC) of Malaysia has decided to include the sport of Muaythai for the first time when hosting this year’s edition of the Malaysian Games, from June 28 to July 7.

According to an article in the Malaysia Times, National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said that Muaythai has been included “due to good response and participation.”

Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said: “The NSC normally include sports in the SUKMA based on the progress and development of such sports in terms of participation and number of associations in the country…All 14 states have confirmed their participation and we expect about 7,000 athletes and officials to take part compared with 5,603 athletes and officials in 2011.”

The official programme of the Malaysian Games will include Muaythai, woodball, aquatic sports (water polo, synchronized swimming), body building, netball, basketball, football, volleyball (beach and indoor volleyball), equestrian, judo, kabaddi, cricket, gymnastics and fencing.

The competition venues will be situated in the Klang Valley, and the Games Village will be located at the nearby Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
