As part of its longstanding mission to harness the power of sport for social good, the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) has once again extended its reach into the heart of Thailand’s correctional system. In a meaningful new chapter of its acclaimed “Sport Is Your Gang” initiative, IFMA has partnered with Samui District Prison to use Muaythai as a transformative tool for rehabilitation, discipline, and reintegration.

Since its launch in 1999, Sport Is Your Gang has grown into a global movement impacting over 80 countries. With a guiding philosophy rooted in empathy and second chances—”the only time we look down on someone is when we help them back on their feet”—the initiative exemplifies IFMA’s dedication to giving back. In Thailand, the birthplace of Muaythai, this vision continues to thrive through strong partnerships with correctional institutions nationwide.

This commitment was powerfully reaffirmed in 2024 through continued collaboration with Prison Fights—a well-known rehabilitation platform that blends sport with justice reform—thanks to the leadership of Khun Chonmanad Vahey and the Ministry of Justice.

On 19 April 2025, the Samui District Prison became the latest setting for Muaythai’s positive impact. In an electrifying training session, male inmates demonstrated focus, resilience, and a deepening connection to the art of Muaythai. This session marked the start of a wider collaboration between IFMA and the Department of Corrections, promoting structured athletic programs to support inmate development.

Leading the visit was IFMA Secretary General Mr. Stephan Fox, accompanied by:

Mr. Apidech Kamkaew of Sanam Petch Bancha Muaythai Gym

World-renowned coach Hanarong Maswichen

Mr. Ralph Beale, founder of one of Thailand’s longest-standing Muaythai gyms

The IFMA team was warmly received by Mr. Kasem Sanyawut, Chief of Samui District Prison, alongside Mr. David Thongruang, Acting Director of Inmate Development, and Mr. Chainat Usama, Head of the Male Wing.

Throughout the session, Mr. Fox and the visiting team offered technical coaching, motivational guidance, and personal stories, fostering a shared sense of purpose and potential among the inmates. More than just a showcase of physical prowess, the event underscored the emotional and mental strength cultivated through Muaythai.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to embed sports into rehabilitation programs, offering a powerful alternative path for inmates to build discipline, regain confidence, and prepare for reintegration into society.

A formal signing ceremony to officially mark the partnership between IFMA and Samui District Prison is scheduled for next week.

Through projects like this, IFMA continues to champion the idea that Muaythai is far more than a combat sport—it is a vehicle for change, a source of hope, and a way of life capable of transforming lives from the inside out.
