Today was a day of rest for all of the athletes and officials attending the IFMA World Championships in Cancun Mexico, and many of them visited the ancient Mayan city of Tulum.

Ten coaches left the Grand Oasis resort early this morning, carrying the athletes to this fascinating tourist destination. Built in the year 1200, the ruins still clearly show the tower and defensive structure along the coast, and restoration work continues on the ancient murals. The site was occupied until the end of the 16th century.

Tour guides took the athletes in glorious sunshine for about two hours among the ruins and well-maintained lawns. They also saw a number of interesting iguanas and local birdlife. And of course photo opportunities along the stunning cliff-walks, and pathways.

Back at the hotel, some of the athletes who will compete tomorrow were getting in some light training. And others were just sitting back and enjoying the beautiful beach-side views.

Tomorrow sees some of the women’s gold medal bouts, and also finals for the younger male divisions.
