There has been a significant development for Muaythai in Africa. The Association of African Sports Confederations (UCSA), one of the leading organizations responsible for promoting and developing sports in Africa, has formally recognized Muaythai under their illustrious umbrella. This step is crucial as the UCSA comprises of 54 National Olympic Committees, highlighting the high esteem and importance of the confederation.
The African Muaythai Union (AMU), led by President Driss El Hilali, has been the driving force behind the growth and recognition of Muaythai in Africa. Their persistent efforts have culminated in this landmark recognition, which underscores the global appeal of Muaythai as a sport and art form recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
At the General Assembly, Major General Ahmed Nasser Mohamed, the esteemed President of UCSA, expressed his admiration for the work done by the leaders of Muaythai in Africa, particularly Mr. El Hilali and Mohamed Ibrahim, the President of the Egyptian Muaythai Federation. Major General Ahmed also commended the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) for their significant international contributions and expressed his anticipation for a fruitful collaboration between IFMA and the UCSA.
Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan, President of IFMA, extended his congratulations to the AMU on this momentous day and expressed gratitude to the UCSA for their faith in Muaythai. He emphasized the significance of this day for the continued development of Muaythai across all levels, from grassroots to the elite, on the African continent.
In the wake of this recognition, Egypt has been chosen to host the upcoming African Muaythai Championships. The event is scheduled to take place in Cairo, from the 21st to 25th of February in 2024. This forthcoming tournament is a clear testament to the growing popularity and acceptance of Muaythai in Africa.
