The IFMA World Muaythai Championships will move to the city of Cancun in Mexico in 2018. This marks the first time the Pan-American Continent hosts a muaythai event of this scale, and all IFMA teams are brimming with anticipation for a trip to this beautiful and historical part of the world.

Quetzalcoatl was announced as the mascot of the event which is a Feathered Serpent and is one of the most important deities among pre-hispanic civilizations located in the eastern region of Mexico, where the championship will take place. Legend has it that Quetzalcoatl adopted the human form to share his knowledge with other humans.

This was one of the main ideas to represent the duality between animal power and human knowledge that is very similar to muaythai. The balance of these two qualities makes the perfect combination to practice this sport. The circle symbolises a pre-hispanic border that gives stability and power to the letters and Quetzalcoatl figure.

Mexico is truly a magnificent country with so many sites and monuments which go back thousands of years. It will be an amazing blend of sport, and cultural exchange, and the hosts are ready to welcome the muaythai world.
