A record number of 150 female athletes participated in the Iranian championships 2018 in the beautiful city of Kerman which is famous for its deserts and historical sites dating back thousands of years. It was an impressive event with hundreds of spectators filling the stadium. Iran is one of the countries where Muaythai is a household name for martial arts.Since becoming an IFMA member Iran has made impressive progress in developing Muaythai as a sport and social tool to empower women, develop youth sport, and highlight Iran as a sport loving country.

Since the World Cup in Kazan, Iranian athletes were always part of the final programme and became a leading force in Asian Muaythai. At the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, Iran was the second best team winning a total of 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze with both silver medals won by women, Saeedeh Ghaffari and Fatemeh Yavari, and bronze won by Zahra Boorboorajdary. It was an amazing performance by Iranian athletes.

Last weekend at a three-day tournament more than 600 athletes competed for the national gold medals and a trip to the World Championships in 2018 in Cancun. 150 female participants was a record number in the history of Iranian Muaythai and IFMA can only congratulate the President of the Iranian Muaythai Federation on the amazing growth of Muaythai in Iran and victories at IFMA events are the best proof of the right direction the sport is moving in Iran.
