“International One Standard Muaythai” Framework Set for Global Rollout“
Bangkok, Thailand – April 2025 — The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) is proud to announce the official launch of the updated IFMA International Grading System, under the framework of the “International One Standard Muaythai” initiative. This historic move marks a significant milestone in the global standardisation of Muaythai’s technical, cultural, and educational practices, set to impact over 150 countries beginning in May 2025.
Rooted in IFMA’s core values of Respect, Honour, Excellence, Fair Play, and Cultural Radiance, this initiative strengthens IFMA’s role as the sole IOC-recognised international governing body for Muaythai, fully aligned with the Fundamental Principles of Olympism.
“A unified education system is essential for developing the athletes, coaches, and leaders of tomorrow,” said IFMA President Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan. “This enhanced framework guarantees access to consistent, high-quality education and recognition for all, regardless of age or ability.”
Key Features of the “International One Standard Muaythai” System
Standardised 15-Level Khan Grading System From grassroots to Grandmaster, the new Khan structure enables merit-based progression, culminating in the prestigious titles of Khru (Teacher) and Grandmaster.
Cultural and Philosophical Integration Emphasising Muaythai’s roots, the curriculum includes self-defence, character development, cultural education, and advanced performance theory.
Mandatory Contribution Credit Points Required for advancement to instructor, coach, and master levels, these points highlight the importance of service and community contribution.
International Instructor Recognition Practitioners who attain Khan levels 9 to 15 will receive official IFMA certification, recognised worldwide.
Participation Standards A minimum Khan level will be required to compete in IFMA-sanctioned competitions, ensuring both technical and ethical readiness.
Global Rollout and Implementation
Starting in May 2025, the Grading System will be implemented globally through IFMA’s 100+ national federations, supported by a variety of educational and development initiatives:
Grassroots to Elite Development – inclusive of all ages and abilities
International Muaythai Coaching Courses
International Referee and Jury Certification Programmes
Athlete Development and Youth Empowerment Programmes
All stakeholders—athletes, coaches, referees, and officials—will be evaluated and certified under a transparent, merit-based progression system, fully compliant with IFMA by-laws and operational protocols.
