The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA), together with the Federation of Amateur Muaythai Associations (FAMA), warmly congratulates Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani on his election as President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), confirmed unanimously at the 46th OCA General Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

President Sheikh Joaan’s election represents both continuity and renewal for Asian sport. His journey within the Olympic Movement is one deeply rooted in experience, service, and values. In his remarks following the vote, he reflected on a defining moment of his youth — participating in the Torch Relay of the 2006 Doha Asian Games, travelling for 55 days across 20 Asian nations while carrying a flame that symbolised unity, hope, and shared purpose.

That reflection resonated strongly with the Assembly, drawing sustained applause from delegates representing all 45 Asian National Olympic Committees. It was a powerful reminder that leadership in sport is forged over time — shaped by humility, lived experience, and a lifelong commitment to the ideals of the Olympic Movement.

The General Assembly was formally opened by Timothy Fok, Acting President of the OCA, and featured a special video address from Kirsty Coventry, who underscored the importance of unity, integrity, and collaboration in guiding the future of sport across Asia and beyond.

IFMA and FAMA were represented in Tashkent by senior leadership and members from across the region, joining the wider Asian sporting family in personally congratulating President Sheikh Joaan. Their presence reflected a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation within the Olympic framework and advancing sport as a platform for inclusion, cultural exchange, and youth development.

Looking ahead, IFMA and FAMA express their full confidence in President Sheikh Joaan’s leadership and vision. Both organisations look forward to working closely with the OCA under his presidency to further promote good governance, athlete welfare, safeguarding, and sustainable development — firmly aligned with Olympic values and the enduring spirit of the Olympic flame.
