From 12–13 April 2025, the first national Muaythai selection event for China was held at Kingka Muaythai Park in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, marking a key milestone on the road to the 2025 IFMA World Championships in Antalya and the 2025 World Games in Chengdu.

Over 30 top athletes from across the country came together to compete for coveted positions on the national team. Across two days of fierce bouts, 19 matches were contested and champions were crowned in nine divisions, ushering in a new era of Chinese Muaythai talent.

A Vital Step Towards the International Stage

The event served a dual purpose: to finalise the athletes who will represent China at the upcoming IFMA World Championships in Turkey this May, and to accumulate qualification points ahead of the World Games in August. The selection tournament was conducted under the latest international IFMA rules, judged by a panel of national and international referees to ensure fairness and uphold the highest standards.

Mr Zhang Lei, Minister of the Wushu and Combat Sports Department under China’s General Administration of Sport, emphasised the importance of these trials as a cornerstone in China’s Muaythai development, showcasing not only skill but also tactical intelligence and adaptability under pressure.

Standout Performances Across Divisions

The women’s division saw an inspiring level of skill and determination, drawing loud support from spectators and reflecting the rising strength of China’s female Muaythai athletes. The men’s division featured high-paced contests, particularly in the 54kg and 57kg categories where seasoned athletes clashed with promising newcomers. The 67kg and 71kg finals were hailed as standout performances—tactical masterclasses that highlighted China’s growing international competitiveness.

Notably, athletes born after 2000 accounted for over 60% of the championship titles, signalling a generational shift and the rise of a youthful, ambitious Muaythai movement in China.

Scientific Selection for a Strategic Future

Dr Guo Yi, Head Coach of the national team, explained that the selection process went far beyond competition results. Athletes were evaluated through a comprehensive system including physical performance tests, tactical and technical assessments, and psychological evaluations. This holistic approach ensures that the selected athletes are not only ready for today’s challenges but are also being developed with long-term international success in mind.

Following the trials, the selected athletes will enter a closed training camp to prepare intensively for the upcoming championships and World Games.

Towards a Golden Era for China Muaythai

With the trials concluded and the new national team confirmed, China is poised to make a strong showing on the world stage. The upcoming IFMA World Championships in Turkey will be the team’s next major test, followed by the highly anticipated World Games on home soil in Chengdu.

As the waves crash along the shores of Double Moon Bay, a new chapter begins. China’s Muaythai athletes are not only rising—they are aiming for gold.
