Kuwait City — The 45th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) marked a pivotal moment in global sports leadership, reaffirming Asia’s central role in shaping the future of the Olympic Movement. Gathering delegates from all 45 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs), as well as representatives from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and recognized Asian sports federations, the assembly underscored the region’s growing influence.
A Farewell and a New Beginning
The assembly featured an emotional farewell address by outgoing IOC President Thomas Bach, who received a standing ovation in honor of his visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to Olympic values. Bach will officially conclude his presidency on June 23.
Taking center stage was Kirsty Coventry, who was formally welcomed as the 10th President of the IOC. A former Olympic champion and Africa’s most decorated female swimmer, Coventry will assume office on the same date. Her election marks a historic shift and symbolizes a new era of inclusivity and athlete-centered governance.
Coventry’s Vision for the IOC
In her first keynote address as President-elect, Coventry outlined her vision for the IOC, emphasizing:
- Asia’s Central Role: Calling Asia “a central cog in the Olympic Movement,” she highlighted the region’s energy, innovation, and recent history of hosting three consecutive Olympic Games.
- Athlete-First Approach: “My first priority is to listen,” she stated, committing to place athletes at the heart of every decision.
- Strategic Priorities:
- Delivering elite-level Games
- Promoting Olympic values at the grassroots
- Strengthening global solidarity
Celebrating “One Asia”
The Assembly opened with “One Asia,” a vibrant cultural showcase celebrating the continent’s rich heritage. Traditional music and dance from China, India, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Lebanon, and Kuwait underscored Asia’s diversity and unity under the Olympic spirit.
Strengthening Alliances: IFMA and FAMA at the Forefront

The event also highlighted the growing presence of recognized federations. The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) and Federation of Asian Muaythai Associations (FAMA)—both recognized by the OCA since 2005—were prominently represented.

Tareq Al Muhairi conveyed the well wishes of FAMA President Abdullah Saeed Al Neyadi and IFMA President Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan. He expressed gratitude to the OCA for the continued inclusion of Muaythai in major events such as the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and the Asian Youth Games.
Al Muhairi also met with IOC President-elect Kirsty Coventry, thanking her for her longstanding support of Muaythai and expressing confidence in her continued advocacy for the sport at the global level.
