The Cairo International Stadium was packed to capacity for the final day of the African Muaythai Championships in beautiful Egypt. Many VIPs were in attendance including Dr. Ashraf Sobhy the Minister of Youth and Sports. The Royal Thai Embassy and representatives of other embassies were also present to support the teams.
The afternoon saw some incredible finals. Egypt’s Islam Mohamed Fathy took on Tunisia’s Afli Yassine in the 81kg male division in a nail-biting 3 rounds of action with Fathy taking all 3 rounds for the win for the Home Team.
Morocco’s female powerhouse, Akhlouf Douaa, was in it to win it and stopped the Home Team’s Noha Aly in the second round for the female 60kg division.
The last hour of the finals had to have been some of the most exciting fights of the tournament with Team Algeria coming out from behind banking 3 gold medals in a row by Yacine Aguerssif, Abderrezak Safsafi and Wail Cherif Mammeri with Aguerssif and Safsafi stopping their opponents in the first and second round respectfully.
His Excellency Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, the Minister of Youth and Sports also gave the honor of being a medal presenter at the medal ceremony. He praised the event and praised the fantastic atmosphere of the stadium, the skills of the athletes from all participating nations and the rich culture of the art and sport of muaythai.
